Am I eligible?  How Can I Qualify?
The only way to get started is to gain two seasons (2,000 hours) of landscape industry experience.  Half of this time may come from education you’ve completed in a post-secondary school diploma program.  Currently there’s no pre-requisite for taking part in the interiorscape evaluation.
How do I earn certification?
What's the Evaluation Process…
An individual's competency is certified through a series of written and practical evaluations.  Written evaluations are designed to measure overall comprehension of the trade, while the practical evaluations measure an individual's level of competence through a series of timed, hands-on exercises.
The written evaluation is usually given just before the practical evaluation and generally lasts up to a half day.  A pre-evaluating orientation process is also available in most provinces.
The practical portion of the evaluation is given at a series of stations.  The candidate is required to successfully perform a specific task within a specified time while being observed by a qualified industry judge.

Depending on the industry sector, a total of up to 17 stations must be passed.  A minimum score of 70% is required at all stations before certification status can be obtained.

Have a look at what the examination process covers...

How Should I Proceed?

  1. Complete and submit the application form with payment
  2. Written tests are scheduled on Friday afternoons and practical stations are generally offered on Saturdays
  3. You’ll receive a study guide, plant list, and descriptions of the practical stations, as/if applicable
  4. After you’ve become certified, you can begin to plan your renewal credits to continue your horticultural training and development
  5. Permanent records are maintained for certification and renewal purposes.
Then What? What Are the Next Steps?
You’ll be notified of your evaluation results within 30 days.  Bear in mind that, because of the wide diversity of tasks involved, you may not be successful in all components on your first attempt.
Re-evaluation is only necessary for the components not originally passed, and you’re allowed to re-evaluate as many times as necessary to complete all components you need for your designation.
When you’ve successfully completed the evaluation, you’ll receive a designation certificate (suitable for framing), and the opportunity to purchase CHT logo crests for your work wardrobe.  In addition, you’ll have earned the right to use the CHT logo on your business cards and other professional materials.
How Do I Stay Current?
You’ll need 2 education points, or 1 education point + 1 service point over a one-year period to maintain certification.  Points are monitored by CNLA, and can be earned by attending industry seminars, volunteering for approved industry events, completing internet work, and by serving as a judge during certification.
